Please join us at Dumbarton Oaks for a special event celebrating the reopening of the gardens and the opening of the exhibition Outside/IN: Martha Jackson Jarvis at Dumbarton Oaks.

Against the backdrop of both the gardens and the museum collections, the exhibition includes paintings and stone, wood, and mosaic sculptures inspired by natural forms and materials by noted Washington artist Martha Jackson Jarvis.

The exhibition continues a series of contemporary art installations at Dumbarton Oaks. The title Outside/IN refers to the fact that the exhibition spans both outdoor and indoor spaces. It also alludes to how Jackson Jarvis brings together in the studio materials and images often initially encountered and collected outdoors. In an unusual collaboration between the artist and curators, these connections are reinforced through comparisons with work from Dumbarton Oaks’ museum collections.

Jackson Jarvis grew up in Lynchburg and Philadelphia, studied at Howard University, and received a BFA from the Tyler School of Art and an MFA from Antioch University. Her experience growing up in the South, especially her early attachment to rural life and her experience of nature, as well as her understandings of the distinctive patterns of African and African American culture, continue to inform her work.

Jackson Jarvis and Dumbarton Oaks Director of Garden and Landscape Studies John Beardsley will participate in an illustrated discussion at 5:30 p.m., followed by a reception in the museum and garden at 6:30 p.m. When you register for the event, please choose if you would like to attend the discussion and reception, or just the reception. Seating for the discussion is limited.
