Description

Italian inscription dedicated to Prince Gelasio B.A. Caetani, the Italian ambassador to the United States from 1922 to 1924, who was a close friend of the Blisses. The drawing shows a portion of quotation lines 139-141 of Canto XXVIII of Dante's Purgatorio.

The lettering of the inscription was taken from the Caetani's family manuscript of Dante's work.

Caroline Phillips, a friend of the Blisses, suggested Dante's quotation for the inscription according to correspondence B:CP 1933.07.09.

Drawing unsigned, probably created by Beatrix Farrand's Office under the direction of Beatrix Farrand as part of series of drawings of the lead inscription in the arch of the arbor.

Drawing undated, probably created in 1935 based on corresponding dated drawings of the lead inscription.

Written on drawing: lead; plaster cut in.

Title created by cataloger.
