Photographer unidentified.

Taken between 1937, based on a National Park Service aerial photograph showing the fences, and around 1949, when the frame yard was dismantled and seeded with grass.

Don Smith was superintendent or assistant superintendent of the gardens, 1957-1992. Dumbarton Oaks Archives offer an interview with Don Smith and a conversation with him as part of the Oral History Project.
