On April 18, 2014, Professor Dimiter Angelov visited Dumbarton Oaks with five students from his Byzantine Civilization (600–1453) class. During their visit, the students were introduced to several departments of Dumbarton Oaks, participated in two object-study sessions, and had the opportunity to give informal talks on objects from the Byzantine Collection.

Aaron Palmer and Daniel Lupatkin presented on a pyxis, Alexandra Tartaglia presented on a reliquary, Diptarka Hait presented on the Roundel with John II Comnenus, and Alicia Koski presented on Byzantine Seals.

Alexandra Tartaglia: “Two weeks ago I was able to visit to the Dumbarton Oaks museum with my Byzantine history class. I was struck by the beauty of the museum and wide array of artifacts that I was able to study. Being able to study Byzantine artifacts so closely was an amazing experience. I had spent many hours researching these artifacts for class and looking at photos online, but when I saw the objects in person it brought an entirely new element to my study. I was able to notice things I had never noticed when merely looking at the pictures and reading the descriptions. The objects seemed to be magical. The staff and our tour guides were very friendly and knowledgeable. Any question I had about an object, was immediately answered by the professionals at the museum with great detail. Overall, I had a wonderful experience and I am so grateful I was given this opportunity.”
