Short-Term Residencies
Dumbarton Oaks offers a limited number of short-term residencies for advanced graduate students who are either preparing for their PhD general exams or writing their doctoral dissertations in the field of Byzantine, Pre-Columbian or Landscape Architecture Studies.
Each residency provides up to two weeks of free accommodation in the Fellows Building and free lunches on weekdays. In addition, an unlimited pass to the Library will be issued for the period of the residency.
Successful applicants for residencies will be eligible to apply a second time before they receive their PhD degrees. The award of a residency does not preclude a subsequent award of a junior or a regular fellowship.
The number of residencies that can be awarded will depend on space availability in the Fellows Building.
Application Procedure
Applicants must send the following to the appropriate Director of Studies, at least 30 days before the preferred residency dates:
- Letter of request. Specify a) the desired period of stay (with alternatives if possible); b) the purpose of the visit (e.g. to read for general exams or to research a dissertation).
- A brief curriculum vitae. List a) address and telephone number; b) U.S. Social Security number; c) education, awards, and honors; d) present and past positions, if applicable; e) publication, papers read, field research, etc.; f) a statement about language competence.
- In addition, applicants must have their academic advisor send a letter of recommendation directly to the appropriate Director of Studies at Dumbarton Oaks.
The three programs (Byzantine, Garden and Landscape, Pre-Columbian) offer residential fellowships during the summer and academic year.
