No. 1554. 28e Année. - 3 Janvier 1885

Théodora, drame en cinq actes, de M. Victorien Sardou [Theodora, play in five acts, by Victorien Sardou] / Ranconté par l'Univers Illustré

Paul Destez / F. Petit

[All to Theodora! Here is the heroine of the day, here is the sensational event of the season. All of Paris feels the same attraction to the famous Cypriot as did Justinian, emperor of the East, and the tragedy to which she gives her sonorous name truly seems to be a "present of the gods" in this time of theatrical lull....]

EXHIBITION

Imagining the Empress: Theodora in Popular Culture, 1882-1922
April-October 2017

Newspapers and magazines became important advertisers for the theater, and the grandeur of Victorien Sardou's play, Théodora, proved particularly well-suited to their full-page illustrations. This review appeared on January 3, 1885, in L'Univers illustré, a popular French newspaper. It depicts various dramatic scenes in Sardou’s play, including one in which Theodora stabs the captured rebel Marcellus. A large portion of the issue was devoted to Sardou’s romance, which at the time had only run for several months. Also featured were a profile of Sardou, a sample of the script, and a page of music by Jules Massenet from the production.
