HISTORICAL NOTE
Henri Focillon (1881–1943) was a French art historian and medievalist. He served as the Director of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and Professor of Art History at the University of Lyon, the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, the Sorbonne in Paris, the Collège de France in Paris, and Yale University. In the spring of 1941, Focillon was appointed the first Senior Research Fellow at Dumbarton Oaks, a post which he held through the following fall term.
