Paris 20.6.23Wednesday.

It was a great moment, dearest Mildred, when that ivoryA tenth-century ivory (BZ.1972.21) representing the archangel Gabriel, now in the Byzantine Collection at Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection. When the Blisses gave the ivory to the Tylers, they were in Paris, en route between Washington, D.C., and Stockholm, where Robert Woods Bliss was posted as U.S. minister. The Blisses had sailed on the President Roosevelt from New York on May 26, 1923. See “Five Liners Sailing Today for Europe; Many Have Booked Passage on Homeric, Baltic, Cameronla, Roosevelt and Suffren. The South Lures Others; Colonel E.M. House Going Abroad—Robert Woods Bliss, New Minister to Sweden, Leaving for Post,” New York Times, May 26, 1923. dawned upon me, and I want to tell you again how I cherish it and that it means much to me that an object embodying the qualities in art that mean most to me should come to me from you and Robert. Elisina and I felt very comfy and happy after last evening.

Yours always
Royall Tyler

If you could manage to take an afternoon next week, might we not run out of Paris and see a church?
