Royall Tyler to Robert Woods Bliss, August 15, 1939

Geneva 15/8/39

Dear Robert.

Kaleb’s attractive brother Hagop (je n’invente pas)“I’m not making this up.” turned up here this morning, with a long screed of which I am enclosing a copy. The whereabouts of this copy are not known. It boils down to the following:

1) If Kaleb sends the Coptic stuffBZ.1939.13 and BZ.1939.14.1–25. in my name, he escapes having to pay frs. 24,640. I’ve agreed to this.

2) Kaleb assumes that the insurance is covered on your side, as last time.

3) “Discrétion absolue”“Absolute discretion.”

4) Les malheurs de Sophie.“The misfortunes of Sophie,” probably a reference to the children’s novel written in 1858 by the Comtesse de Ségur.

5) Antinoë stuff,BZ.1939.13. later.

6) Re—“discretion”

Thanks for you cable announcing that you are cabling the funds to cover this lot.BZ.1939.14.1–25. I’ll at once remit to Kaleb.

I’m glad you’ve got the lot. I hope we’ll land the kilim.BZ.1939.13.

Love to you both

Yrs

R. T.
