Royall Tyler to Mildred Barnes Bliss, July 20, 1938

League of Nations

20.VII.38

Your wireThis wire has not been preserved. of the 19th has reached me, dearest Mildred. I’m glad the date of publicationDumbarton Oaks Papers 1. is deferred—tho’, to show you I meant business when I said I’d do it, I’ll add that I have done a paper,Hayford Peirce and Royall Tyler, “Elephant Tamer Silk, VIIIth Century,” in Three Byzantine Works of Art, Dumbarton Oaks Papers 2 (1941): 19–26. ready for typing, on your Elephant-Tamer silk.BZ.1927.1.

The EmperorBZ.1937.23. would have been still more fun, but from my talk with F., the other day, there’s no hope of their consent to release it in advance of the date fixed. We’ll do him, however, and the MAD,BZ.1938.62. and have ‘em ready to shoot when the time comes.

I’ll send my draft on the Elephant-tamer to Hayford, and get him agreed on it, so that the copy may be ready by October.

I want to put in a lot of reproductions—some 20 objects, on a decent scale (if too small, they’re useless, viz. the Princeton prints). If 20 are too many for you, I’ll reduce the number, but I hope you’ll pass them all.

I’ve just returned from another week end at Antigny. Elisina is certainly progressing, in that splendid air and favourable surroundings. Only she must be very careful.

I’ve just had an air-letter from Kaleb saying that the two KhawamKhawam Brothers, an antiquities business that was founded in Cairo in 1862 by Sélim Khawam. braceletsBZ.1938.64–65. about which I wrote to you have arrived, and are magnificent. He wants me to go and see them, and get a decision from you. I’ll try to do so as soon as possible. In the meantime, please think over whether you want them, subject to my report. They do look very good to me. We’ll try to screw the price down.

Much love to you both

Yrs

R. T.
