Gospel Lectionary with Marginal Illuminations

Middle Byzantine, second half of 11th century. Dumbarton Oaks MS 1, BZ.1939.12.

Gospel lectionary in Greek, including full synaxarion (movable feasts) and menologion (fixed calendar) from 1 September to 10 October. Probably written in Constantinople in second half of the eleventh century. One hundred forty-nine leaves: parchment, color illustrations, 32.6 cm, written in two columns (ff. 1r–42v) and in single cruciform block (ff. 43r–149v) all 24 lines, blind-ruled, Greek liturgical miniscule script. Greek fifteenth-century binding between beech boards flush with text block, outer edges grooved, raised at top and bottom “all greca.” Covered in dark brown Morocco, blind-tooled. Two metal pegs survive; clasps missing.

Collation: 1(7), 2(8), 3(7), 4(6), 5(8), 6(6), 7(6), 8–9(8), 10(5), 11–13(8), 14(6), 15(5), 16(8), 17(6), 18(8), 19(5), 20–21(8), 22(2)

Illumination: One hundred sixty-five decorated initial letters of which 24 historiated, showing mostly Christ, but also John the Baptist, Peter, Nicodemus, Thomas, Joseph of Arimathea, and Andrew. There are two marginal scenes: the Ascension (fol. 32r) and Peter and the cock (fol. 122v), as well as a Crucifixion embedded in the text block (fol. 145r). Three full-page cruciform headpieces composed of vegetal and geometric motifs.

Table of Lections

Dumbarton Oaks Manuscript One, apart from ten gaps of one or two folios each, contains the full Synaxarion and the Menologion up to October 10. The table below lists the liturgical dates, their location by folio number, and the appointed Gospel reading. Where texts are missing or incomplete because of missing folios, the usual full reading is given in square brackets, and the interruption point noted. Where texts are cross-referenced, rather than written out, the referenced reading is given in parentheses. More information on the daily lections can be found in C. R. Gregory, Textkritik des Neuen Testamentes (Leipzig: J. C. Hinrich, 1900), 1:327–86.
