Epitome thesauri antiquitatum

Epitome thesauri antiquitatum

Jacobus Strada (1507-1588). Epitome thesauri antiquitatum. Lyons: Strada and Thomas Guerin, 1553.

Strada was an antiquarian and art dealer of mixed notoriety. Among his clients were the Fugger family in Augsburg, Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria and emperors Ferdinand I, Maximilian II, and Rudolph II; these private collections became the core of national collections throughout Europe.

Strada, himself an amateur architect, created pen-ink drawings from ancient coins in the collections which he helped to build. After compiling over 30 volumes of drawings, he published this book in separate French, Latin, and German editions with woodcut illustrations that are based on his own drawings. Notably, this book was the first to include illustrations of Byzantine coins.
