Jean Foy-Vaillant (1636-1706). Numismata imperatorum romanorum praestantiora a Julio Caesare ad Postumum usque. Rome: J.B. Bernabo & J. Lazzarni with C. Barbiellini & V. Monaldini, 1743 (first edition 1692).
Commissioned to purchase ancient coins for Louis XIV of France, Vaillant traveled extensively and visited major collections throughout Europe. From his vast knowledge of coins, he wrote a number of books, including studies of Parthian and Seleucid coins.
His 1674 study on Roman coins dating from Julius Caesar’s reign to the mid-third century had been very well-received. In 1743, he wrote this greatly expanded study that includes Byzantine coins.
