Nikephoros’s son and colleague ruled from 26/28 July to 2 October 811, after being wounded in the battle in which his father was killed. He was not expected to live long, and had no children. His brother-in-law Michael I Rangabe seized the throne and tonsured Staurakios, who died three months later.
The seal included here has been identified as either belonging to the joint reign of Staurakios and his father, or to Staurakios alone, with the reverse listed by DO Seals 6 as blank. It is possible to imagine that the extraordinary circumstances of recovering from the battlefield death of the emperor necessitated some ad hoc measures with regards to the boulloterion, including effacing the side that depicted Nikephoros. Staurakios is shown as young and beardless, wearing a chlamys and crown, and holding a globus cruciger.
