This document is an early version of Glanville Downey’s complete translation of the tenth-century ekphrasis by Constantine the Rhodian. It was most likely prepared around 1945, as part of another Dumbarton Oaks project called the “Fontes,” which had a corresponding project referred to as the “Research Archive.” These two projects were initiated by Wilhelm Koehler, Senior Fellow in charge of studies in the early years of Dumbarton Oaks.
This translation by Downey shows how the Holy Apostles project grew out of the “Fontes” and the “Research Archive,” and it also exemplifies Downey’s indispensable role in the reconstruction project.
