Κομμερκίου Σικελίας.

(Seal of) the kommerkion of Sicily.

Commentary

A seal with the portrait of a standing emperor and the inscription κομμερκίου Σικελίας is preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Syracus (Borsari, Amministrazione, 131, no. 1). One would assume that this was the seal used for official business of the kommerkion, while the specimen republished here, deprived of the emperor's portrait, was used for everyday correspondence; see Oikonomides, Kommerkiarioi, 36.
