Salman ibn Ali (tenth/eleventh century)

Accession number BZS.1951.31.5.3743
Diameter 23 mm

Cross surrounded by elegant fleurons. Border of dots.

Arabic inscription. Border of dots.

سلمان ابن علي

سلمان ابن علي

Salman ibn Ali.

The reading of the reverse Arabic inscription on this token is uncertain; it is possible that it reads سلام عليكم (Peace be upon you), though does not seem likely from the formation of the letters, the fact that this is a token makes this reading plausible. سلمان (Salman) is a possible reading, as is سليمان (Suleiman), though the Arabic most looks like the much less common سيلمان.
