Commentary

The form Δοράχης, clearly engraved, is a hapax; when we encounter the abbreviated form Δοραχ, we tend to transcribe it as Δοράχιον. This may need revision. The identification of the see must be considered certain, the more so as the seal is decorated with the Athenian martyr St. Isauros, as on DO Seals 1, no. 12.16. On St. Isauros, see Laurent, Corpus V/3, 125.

The person attested here is quite likely the well-known Laurentios who signed the acts of the patriarchal synod (1032-39), and may have signed the order of excommunication pronounced by Michael Keroularios against the pontifical legates in 1054: Grumel, Regestes, 840, 845, 846, 960. He may have been identical to the unnamed metropolitan of Dyrrachion who was arrested for treason in 1031-32 (Skylitzes, 385). For his career as metropolitan of Dyrrachion, see DHGE 14 (1960), col. 1250.
