Commentary

Twenty-five seals belonging to Gregory patrikios and strategos are in the Dumbarton Oaks Collection. At least seven boulloteria were used, with the following distinguishing features: presence or absence of palm branches flanking reverse inscription; order of inscription in quarters of monogram (τῷ σῷ δούλῳ and τῷ δούλῳ σοῦ); decoration on reverse (plain cross and cross with tendrils); letter forms (especially omegas); and line breaks. With these exceptions, the inscriptions on each type are otherwise identical, and so must be attributed to the same individual.
