Commentary
According to Lemerle (Philippes, 266), the town (founded in the ninth century) and the bishopric (initially suffragan to Philippoi, then to Serres) is to be sought in the district of Zavalta. The bishopric was in existence by the time of the Photian synod, 879/80. Cf. Laurent, Corpus V/1, 542-43 and Theocharides, Katepanikia, 90.
