Commentary

This seal and BZS.1958.106.5576 come from the same boulloterion.

The seal of an Artabanes imperial spatharios and protonotarios of Chaldia,  with a patriarchal cross, dated to the ninth/tenth century (Ermitage M-6148), was published by I. Sokolova, “Znak sokrascenija na vizantijskih pecatjah VIII-pervoj poloviny X v.,” Viz. Vrem. 47 (1986) 157-162, plate VI, no. 5 (cf. SBS 3 [1993] 171-172). He could be identical to the owner of the present specimen at a later stage of his career.
