Commentary

We know of several strategoi of Sicily named Constantine who lived in the ninth century; Constantine patrikios, who governed the island in 805 (MGH, Epistolae V [Berlin, 1899] 98, no. 7; cf. Amari I, 351 note 1, 353); the patrikios Constantine Souda, appointed to Sicily in 826/27 (A. A. Vasiliev, Byzance et les Arabes I [Brussels, 1935] 67 note 1; Zacos-Veglery, no. 1821, and Laurent, REB 21 [1963] 134); Constantine Kontomytes, the father-in-law of kaisar Bardas, who took office there in 859/60 (Theophanes Cont., 175; the Chronicle of Cambridge in Vasiliev, op. cit., I, 346); Constantine Karamallos, patrikios, the defender of Taormina in 902 (Falkenhausen, Dominazione, 101-2, no. 65). We also have several seals of strategoi named Constantine that come from different boulloteria; Sig., 214 note 2, no. 5, cf. Birch, no. 17738; Borsari, Amministrazione, 156 (five specimens in the museum of Syracuse); Laurent, Sicile, 45, no. 1 (museum of Palermo); Zacos-Veglery, nos. 1822a-b; See also Winkelmann, Ämterstruktur, 88-89.
