Commentary
It is hard to agree with Winkelmann, Ämterstruktur, 117, that this doux, who appears only here, was the governor of the province in an intermediary stage between the archontes and the strategoi. After all, δούξ could be the title of the chieftain of a tribe, who held office simultaneously with the regular authorities of a theme (cf. Listes, 342, 349).
