Commentary
This is the Joseph Tarchaneiotes who deserted the emperor Romanos Diogenes before the battle of Manzikert in 1071. His career as governor of Antioch is well recorded by the historians: Laurent, “Gouverneurs d’Antioche,” no. 32.
A different seal of the same person, bearing a representation of St. Demetrios but recording the same inscription, was photographed in Antioch and is mentioned by Laurent, “Gouverneurs d’Antioche,” no. 32 (reproduced on pl. I); it is now published in Seyrig, no. 161.
