Commentary

Zacos-Veglery correctly identified the emperor as Leontios and dated the seal 696/697. Not having deciphered the remnants of the circular inscription on the obverse, they did not establish the title and identity of the owner. During this same indiction year, Kyriakos apo hypaton is attested as logothetes of the apotheke of (Phrygia) Kapatiane and Lydia (Zacos-Veglery, no. 195=BZS.1955.1.4378). Kyriakos farmed out this position and likely did the same for the position of Sicily. But as his name cannot be read on our seal, its reconstruction, although probable, is not certain. For the genikos logothetes of apothekai, see Oikonomides, Kommerkiarioi, 46.
