Description

Photograph of the illustration that appears in  Le premier volume des plus excellents bastiments de France ... Paris 1576-1579, v. 1. The illustration shows the etching of the arbor from the Château de Montargis designed by Jacques Androuet Du Cerceau. The Beatrix Farrand designed arbor in the Dumbarton Oaks,Terrace E and later the Herb Garden and Arbor Terrace was based on a section of this larger Du Cerceau arbor design.

Etching created between 1550-1579 based on information contained in The Mark J. Millard architectural collectionv. 1, French books, Washington, D.C. : National Gallery of Art,  c1993-c2000, p. 15.
