Description

Unsigned, penciled drawing possibly created by Beatrix Farrand or her office staff and attributed to her.

Undated, probably created between 1930 and 1937. Later date based on notation of "Gray" on verso and William Gray's date of death, 1937.

On verso in pencil: "Gray - revised drawing, box garden." Gray may refer to William Gray, the first superintendent or head gardener of Dumbarton Oaks from 1922-1937.

Handwritten comments and dimensions added in black ink by unknown hand.

"Do you think that by placing the tallest of this hedge on the North side of Box Garden & grad down with the smaller ones, that they will work in alright considering that the main approach to the Box garden is down the Box walk & the large plant in the centre will offset the different heights."

"Will you please let me know, what variety of Box & in what size you have in mind for these hedges." Comment is asking more details of the creator of the drawing.

Drawing is multiple pieces of paper attached with some type of adhesive.
