The spring lecture in Garden and Landscape Studies will be delivered by Mary Margaret Jones, president and senior principal of Hargreaves Associates in San Francisco and Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Hargreaves Jones Landscape Architecture in New York. Jones has led a number of the firm’s award-winning projects around the globe, including the master concept design for the 2000 Sydney Olympics and the parklands for the 2012 London Olympics. Her talk at Dumbarton Oaks will explore the synergies and differences between these projects and what she and the firm learned about such “spectacle landscapes” from one project to the next. In addition to her Olympic projects, Jones has also led the firm’s work on the University of Cincinnati Master Plan, Crissy Field in San Francisco’s Presidio, and Discovery Green in Houston, Texas. She is currently leading the design for Destination Bayfront in Corpus Christi, Texas, as well as a new seventy-acre Downtown Park for Oklahoma City.
Mary Margaret Jones has served on numerous juries, lectures widely, and is active in the public discourse of design and development issues. She is a Prince Charitable Trust Fellow in Landscape Architecture of the American Academy in Rome and is current chair of the AAR Board of Trustees. Jones is a past visiting critic in landscape architecture at the Harvard Design School and past member of the National Advisory Council for the Mayors’ Institute on City Design. She is a fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects and the Urban Design Forum and a senior fellow of the Design Futures Council.
