EXHIBITION

Encountering Ancient America: Machu Picchu in Popular Culture, 1911-1965
February-April 2018

Many people first encountered Machu Picchu through the mail, in the form of postcards and stamps. Peruvian photographers sold Machu Picchu postcards as early as the 1920s, but larger companies also seized upon the citadel’s iconic nature. Through such media, images of the site circulated well beyond the circles of people who could afford to travel to Peru themselves.
