Frank Leslie’s Publishing House was founded in New York City in 1853 by Frank Leslie (1821–1880), an English-born, American engraver, illustrator, and publisher. He was born in Ipswich, England, and came to the United States in 1848. The company’s best-known publication was Frank Leslie’s Weekly, which began in 1855. The Weekly ceased publication in 1922. After Frank Leslie’s death, the business was run by his wife, Miriam Leslie, who legally changed her name to Frank Leslie in 1881.
