EXHIBITION

Imagining the Empress: Theodora in Popular Culture, 1882-1922
April-October 2017

The early years of the twentieth century were the high point of the “postcard craze.” Along with more traditional scenic views (view cards), postcards allowed everyday people to share experiences of art and theater. This postcard and the others in the series, made in France from photographs by Paul Boyer (1861–1908), display scenes from the 1902 production of Victorien Sardou’s Théodora, which starred Sarah Bernhardt (1844–1923) as the empress. Theodora is shown in her boudoir, consulting a sorceress, fraternizing with her rebel lover Andreas, and preparing to kill the conspirator Marcellus – all fictionalized events created for the play.
