The Blisses acquired this painting at the Charles Vignier sale at the Hôtel Drouot, Paris, on May 21, 1931, through Royall Tyler, Paris, who bid on the painting. They authorized the Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection to sell the painting to the dealer Rosenberg & Stiebel, New York, on December 22, 1952. The painting was subsequently sold by Sotheby's, New York (?), on March 30, 1966, and entered the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wilmers, who gave it to the National Gallery of Art, London (acc. no. NG6536), in 1991.
