Notes

W 733 (olim Phillipps 10384)
Ca. 1300

No. 560 (p. 197) of Bond & Faye (see bibliography). Purchased by Walters in 1946, previously owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford (1766-1827), and Sir Thomas Phillipps, 1st Baronet (1792-1872).

A well-known psalter treated many times elsewhere, with many small illustrations and verbal marginalia throughout, whereof we note only the following, unlikely to be included in biblical or art-historical studies:

23v  Lower outer margin: a charming and well-done sketch of Ῥωμιὸς with pointed cap, reclining as πρεζάκιας vel sim. and smoking a long, contented pipe by an ornamental footer. On the inner side, into the gutter, «τοῦς δεὶ καὶ (δ?)»

57v  Upper margin:  two bright asteroidal figures, identical but labeled ἥλιος and σελήνη.

76v  Short inscription in Latin characters, including the name Theodosio Cacuri Da(t?)ene.

80v  Lower margin, a sketch of a boat or small ship, with sail, three pairs of oars, and passengers.

85v  In the upper margin, a rude hand has written «ἄγιως ωθ(εό)ς αγιος εἱσχηρός» and, to the left, an even ruder, infantile drawing of a barefooted, gross-fingered figure with three eyes in a vertical column, presumably David, holding a scroll, «οτι (αδ?) θ(μ?) (ης?)».

86v  The first line of the page is Psalm 112.8 (LXX 111.8) and in the upper margin a later, uneven hand has copied out «ϛϛήρικται η [messed-up letter] καρ» (with first stigma in place of epsilon).

89  Large section ripped out from lower outside corner, after writing, affecting parts of six lines.

96v  Abbreviated reckoning of prices in kuruşlar & paralar (γρόσια καὶ παράδες· cf. WEST.MTA.4.15 and 11.6)

102r  Sums in Indian numerals, with total as ὄλϖς (leg.
