In this notebook entry, Albert Friend discusses the date of the mosaic decoration of the Holy Apostles. He references an anecdote from the Patria of Constantinople (quoted as “Codinus, Topographia”), which is a compilation on the history and monuments of the Byzantine capital. According to this story, the emperor Basil I took precious marbles and mosaics from the Holy Apostles in order to decorate his own foundation, the Nea Ekklesia. Thus, for Friend, the two churches are closely related, and the textual source leads him to propose a tentative date of 878–886 for the mosaics of the Holy Apostles.
