The idea for a symposium dedicated to the church of the Holy Apostles took shape in 1947, when Sirarpie der Nersessian suggested in a letter to Albert M. Friend that the next Dumbarton Oaks symposium should be dedicated to the lost monument. Der Nersessian also stressed the importance of giving the younger members of the research group, namely Paul Underwood and Glanville Downey, a chance to speak alongside senior scholars. As the symposiarch, Der Nersessian gave a paper on ninth-century mosaic decoration. The program also included Francis Dvornik and Milton Anastos, who discussed the intellectual and theological background of the Holy Apostles.
