Plaza of Tenochtitlan

This engraving from Historia de Nueva España, a 1770 edition of Hernán Cortés’s writings and the oldest book in this exhibit, shows the plaza at the center of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital city. The plaza is described as a place where “eight or ten thousand Indians danced.”
