Obverse

Bust of the Archangel Michael, wings outspread, holding the globus cruciger and a trefoil sceptre. Epigraphy on either side: ΑΜ̅: ἀ(ρχάγγελος) Μ(ιχαήλ). Border of dots.

Reverse

Inscription of four lines beginning with a cross. Border of dots.

Translation

σφραγὶς Μιχαὴλ τῶν νόμων διδασκάλου.

Seal of Michael, professor of law.

Commentary

The owner of the seal presents himself as a professor of law (νομοδιδάσκολος), but the seal seems to be too late to connect him with the school of laws founded in the 1040s. The absence of a family name prevents any sure identification of this Michael; see Wassiliou-Seibt's comments in her entry on this metrical seal.
