Commentary

Several other seals in the collections of Dumbarton Oaks and Fogg Museum, linked to this entry, bear the name of Leo Kastamonites. Katsaros (Katsaros, Iōannēs Kastamonitēs, p.134-138) dates them all, including the present specimen, to the eleventh or twelfth century. There is not enough evidence, however, to establish whether they belonged to the same individual.
