Translation

Θεοτόκε βοήθει Θεοδώρῳ πρωτοσπαθαρίῳ καὶ κριτῇ τῶν Κιβυρραιωτῶν τῷ Πρωτεύοντι.

Mother of God, help Theodore Proteuon, protospatharios and judge of the Kibyrraiotai.

Commentary

The reading of Proteuon's first name is by no means certain on our specimens; the letter before the abbreviation could be a phi and the name may read Θεοφάνει. We maintain the name of Theodore because we know him from other seals on which the name is clearly written out (Laurent, Corpus II, no. 838 [where our two specimens are mentioned]; Seyrig, no. 316). John Mauropous wrote an epitaph for a judge named Proteuon (Ioannis Euchaitorum metropolitae quae in cod. Vatic. gr. 676 supersunt, ed. P. Lagarde [Göttingen, 1882], 20-21).
