Commentary

Zacos-Veglery have rightly identified the emperor as Leontios and dated the seal to the indiction year 696/697. We take it that Kyriakos farmed out the collection of taxes within the boundaries of the apotheke mentioned on his seal: cf. Oikonomides, Kommerkiarioi, 46.

The Roman province of Lydia kept its name and its administrative prerogative until the ninth century, in spite of the fact that theme of the Thrakesion was then well in existence.
