Commentary

The owner of this seal was probably Theodosios III Chrysoberges, patriarch from before 30 August 1057 until well after 4 April 1059 (Grumel, “Patriarcat,” 142–44). Other seals of Theodosios are published by Laurent, Corpus 5.2: nos. 1522–24; Corpus 5.3: no. 2021 (see below); Zacos, Seals II, nos. 57b, c, and d; Likhachev, Molivdovuly, p. 79 (no. LXI, 1); Seyrig, no. 234; and Seibt-Zarnitz, no. 5.1.7. One more appeared in the Sternberg Sale XXV (25–26 Nov. 1991), no. 489, as noted in SBS 3 (1993): 204.
