Commentary

This specimen and BZS.1951.31.5.276 are from the same boulloterion; the reading of this seal is restored on the basis of its counterpart.

A Philaretos of Euchaita was synkellos by the middle of the tenth century (Darrouzès, Épistoliers, 73; cf. Zacos, Seals II, no. 874). He is probably identical to the owner of the present seal, which must thus have been issued shortly before this time. Cf. the comments in the edition of Laurent.
