Commentary
Corfou (Κέρκυρα, gen. Κερκύρας or Κερκύρης or Κερκύρων in the plural) was at first a suffragan bishopric of Nikopolis. Along with the rest of the Illyricum it was attached to the Patriarchate of Constantinople (8th century); it eventually rose to the rank of archbishopric (second half of the 9th century: Laurent, Corpus V/1, 672) and to a metropolis in the second half of the 11th century, well before 1089 (REB 29 [1971] 268-70); Laurent, Corpus V/1, 618-19; Malamut, Iles, 355-56).
