According to Philip Mayerson, the embolator (ἐμβολάτωρ) was an official responsible for depositing monetary payments in the state bank: see "The Embolator in sixth/seventh-century papyri," Bulletin of the American Society of Papyrologists 46 (2009) 139-43.
